In a modern granite and glass structure at the foot of the capitol, the building boasts four major permanent exhibits, including vintage aircraft suspended from ceilings and several new temporary exhibits every year. Originaly constucted in 1877, the Wallace House has been rebuilt and restored to a fine example of a turn-of-the-century residence in the Sherman Hill National Hiatoric District of Des Moines, Iowa. "Uncle Henry" Wallace moved to the house in 1895 when he co-founded the publication "Wallaces' Farmer" with his sons Henry C. and John. Several exhibits rotate year round.
